7 words of Jesus from the Cross: 3) Woman here is your son.
7 words for 7 days
The seven words of Christ from the Cross.
3) Woman, here is your son.
No doubt that Jesus did everything, all by himself. Yet he wants our
contribution. Mary can tell us, she who was there at the feet of the
cross and shared all the sufferings of her Son. Simeon had foretold
her in the temple: “a sword will pierce your soul”. No discounts
for those who follow the Lord. And she suffers in union with her son,
she accepts everything and offers everything in silence. Jesus values
this union and changes it into Mission: Woman you were united with me
in suffering, now you must carry on my mission: take care of my
disciples. He calls her “woman” like the first woman, by whom sin
entered the world, but also like the woman of the first promise: “I
will put enmity between you and the woman”. This enmity reaches
now, on Calvary, its climax, and here sin is defeated.
Christ suffers, he asks us to be united with him and he joins us. The
family was united in Bethlehem is now united at Calvary. Joseph was
not there, John was there instead, and with his the whole humanity.
To all of us Jesus tells: “Here is your mother”.
Jesus never leaves us alone. He asks us to suffer with him and he
gives us all the help, the support we may need. Any suffering of
ours, no matter where he comes from, just or unjust, make of us
co-redeemer, if we accept them with faith and offer them, with love,
to Him who is on the Cross. Are we willing to accept our sufferings?
Are we able to accept the idea that God can make use of them to
benefit someone else? Do we have faith?
From
the words of St. Luigi Orione: “Words
always on fire. Suffer, keep
silent, pray, love, crucify oneself and adore. The light and the
peace of the heart. I will climb my Calvary like a meek lamb.
Apostolate and martyrdom: martyrdom and apostolate”.
