The penitential act is moved before the
offertory and so is the sign of peace quoting the passage of the
Gospel Mt 5:23.
This we have heard today is one of the parables of
the Kingdom. It is, actually, not a parable but an allegory because
is very short, more like an example or a comparison.
The points to underline in this passage are 2:
- The great value of what is found
- The great desire to possess it to the point of giving up everything for it.
A treasure is something that can change the life
of that farmer forever. So it is really worthy to put everything at
loss. Do you remember the passage of St. Paul to the Philippians
(3:7-8): I regard everything as loss
because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For
his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as
rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him.
So is something that inspires in you a strong
desire, moves you to great effort even a crazy one in order to
achieve it. There comes the courage of the saints, the one which made
them saint.
It is not important if you found it because of
your long research (like the merchant) or by pure chance (like the
farmer). The Lord shows himself whenever he wants, in the most
unexpected way.
It is not important if it is the fulfillment of a
life, like it happens to the merchant who had already other pearls,
or it will make in us a radical change like it happens to the farmer
that from servants becomes now a rich owner.
It is important that we are willing to risk
everything, to surrender everything in order to embrace this new step
in our life.
Every one of us must have had a particular moment,
a core experience of the love of Jesus. The answer to our vocation
must be based on the awareness that Jesus is working in me, wants to
do wonderful things through me. Living for Jesus is something so
beautiful that it would be a waste to do any other thing. If that is
the case our apostolate takes a completely different style, much more
effective, much more incarnated, much more divine.
