The temptation of Success. The human way of thinking

Manila Retreat 6

Mass: Away from me Satan (Mt 16:13-28.)

Go away from me Satan because you do not think in God’s way but according to the world
This is one of the central points of the life of Jesus and of the theology of the Synoptic gospels. Let us take it in its contest. Mt 15:22 – 18:5 and Lk 9 are parallel and are the centre of the Gospel. After having preached and made miracles Jesus now tests the understanding of his disciples sending them for a short mission (Lk 9:1-6). Then he makes one of the greatest miracles: the multiplication of bread 9:10-17); finally he can ask the disciples: what do people think of me and what do you think of me (9:18-29). After that he foretells his passion (9:21-27) but this is refused by Peter (Mt 16:13-28). He then goes on mount Tabor for the Transfiguration where the three apostles hear about the passion of Christ from Moses and Elijah (9:28-36); he predicts once again his passion and the disciples do not understand and are afraid to ask (9:44-45); He speaks about real greatness and service while they where speaking about their greatness (9:46-48); and finally he set out decisively to Jerusalem (9:51-56). Until now Jesus has been making a lot of miracles, has been preaching to the crowds and seemed to be successful. Now he is alone with the disciples. The crowds left him. He asks the opinion of his disciples about his identity. The double question: What do people say – what do you say, creates a division between the group of the disciples compared to the rest of people. We are at the beginning of a new family. The family of the real believers, based on the profession of faith of Peter. They are the one who really believe in Jesus, while people think he is only a prophet. From now on he will concentrate only on them, the talks will be addressed mainly to them and with them he starts his journey towards Jerusalem. What I just said sounds nice but not everything goes so smooth. Straight after the profession of faith Peter shows how weak his faith can be. In spite all the experience of being with Jesus, in spite of having declared him the Son of the living God, Peter rejects clearly the perspective of Jesus' death. maybe his answer is dictated by the fear of losing Jesus but it shows also that the idea of the Messiah as political or powerful leader is still deeply rooted in them all. Straight after this episode we will have the transfiguration, which should also strengthen them against the difficulty of Jesus' death. Even here, after a few line, while on the journey to Jerusalem, John and James ask Jesus the permission to send fire from heaven to destroy a village which refused to welcome Jesus.
The message is clear: it is not enough to be religious (disciples or even apostles), it is not enough to proclaim the divinity of Jesus, still we can be serving Satan if we do not accept the reality of the cross.
Satan: The words used by Jesus to address Peter remind us of the third temptation of Jesus in the Desert which we will see later. All through his life Jesus had to face this temptation of accepting human power, human way of success. Jesus is on a completely different position, the way of humility, service, weakness; the way of the Beatitudes, and the way of love, which will ultimately bring him to the cross.
Every time we make choices in the name of human success, of human power, every time we go for easy solutions, which come to compromises with sin for the sake of getting results, we follow the way of the devil, not the way of God. In the last day of our retreat we will speak about the apostolate. The primary purpose of our works is the evangelisation which does not mean conversion but means to make everybody know the “euangellion” the good news of God’s love for them. That means to be prophets in our work. If we aim at a human success we, not only do not evangelize, but often we scandalize people, chase them away from the Church. The best hospital or school with all the possible modern equipments etc. but where one cannot feel the love of God, is the perfect work of Satan.
