Community life 2: differences between family and community

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FAMILY AND RELIGIOUS COMMUNITY

So far I have referred to family and to community as if they were the same thing. Indeed our communities are our families now and should have as much as possible a family atmosphere. But we have to admit that no community will ever be a family in the full sense because there are basic differences which should be respected.

Here are differences
    1. FAMILY
    1. COMMUNITY
    1. Husband and wife chose each other and generate their children
    1. Religious do not choose the members of their communities
    1. They are together for ever
    1. They are together short time and often they have changes
    1. Their number is restricted
    1. They can be in big groups and belong to a bigger “group” (Congregation)
    1. Their aim is inside of the family itself: their unity and welfare. They work together for the fulfilment of each one.
    1. Their aim is an outside matter and often the welfare of each member and the unity has to be sacrificed for that aim to be achieved.
    1. The physical and relational aspects are very important
    1. The physical and relational aspects are not so important
    1. There is a mixture of genders and age groups
    1. No mixture of genders and less differences in age groups
    1. Limited cultural differences among the members
    1. Cultural differences can be sometimes big and are continously changing.

  1. Having said that, we have to remember that the success of both family and community stands in the ability of the members to grow in their capacity of loving, belonging and focusing on the common ideal.
