The IV vow 1: Fidelity to the Pope
The vow of fidelity to the Pope
What is a forth vow?
All the religious congregations must have the three vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. These are called evangelical counsels because they are based on the life of Christ and his teaching. Each congregation has developed an answer to a particular call of the Holy Spirit, which is called “Charism”. Each charism is different from the others and makes the congregations different one from the other.
Through history some congregations decided to have a fourth vow in order to stress the peculiarity of their spirituality. From the very beginning don Orione had a clear idea of doing something special for the Pope and for the Church, and in a few occasions he expressed the desire of having a forth vow. Unfortunately, at that time the Church did not allow any new forth vow, so Don Orione died without seeing his wish fulfilled.
Our forth vow was introduced for the first time in the constitutions prepared by the general chapter in 1981.
Our forth vow
The charism of Don Orione’s family is to bring everybody to the Pope and to the Church, and bring the Pope and the Church to everybody. This is done through any work of charity. In the year 1981 the two congregations of the Sons of Divine Providence and the Little Missionaries Sisters of Charity decided that the fathers should introduce the vow of faithfulness to the Pope while the sisters should introduce the vow of charity. So the two congregations have the same spirit and the same charism but stress it with different vows.
For those who see our congregation but do not know much about theology our vow seems strange. Somebody says: “Why fidelity to the Pope and not to Jesus Christ?” Some other say: “What is the need of this vow since the Pope is the leader for all Christians?”.
Both questions are right but limited.
Our obedience to the Pope does not take away anything to our obedience to God, but just shows a safe way to fulfill it.
The law of the Church says clearly that the Pope is the Vicar of Christ and all Christians must follow his directives, but Don Orione wanted something more than just obedience.
This vow is typical of our congregation, though a few other congregations, among which the Jesuits (availability to the Pope in whatever mission he wants to entrust to them),and the Rosminians (fidelity to the Pope through teaching and preaching), have a similar fourth vow. I said that is typical of our congregation because it touches the heart of our charism.
In order to understand well this vow we have to understand the theological and historical background of it.
